Tonle Sap
Taken 2009-03-02 14:39:06
Tonle Sap is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. Seemingly endless under normal conditions, the lake floods to over 5 times its size during the wet season. About 700 Cambodian families, mostly ethnic Vietnamese, live on the lake year-round in floating villages. To this day, the fishermen still use traditional wooden traps to make their catch. Although fisherman earn a respectable income, the high cost of maintenance for both fishing boats and the floating homes leaves the residents of Tonle Sap with relatively little wealth compared to even the poorest of farmers.
